What is an Asian goal line (over/under 2.25, 2.75)?

An Asian goal line is an Over/Under line that can refund some or all of your stake. A whole line such as 3.0 refunds you on exactly 3 goals. A quarter line such as 2.25 or 2.75 splits your stake in half across the two nearest lines, so you can win half or lose half.

How are Asian goal lines different from standard lines?

A standard Over/Under line in football (soccer in the US) ends in .5, such as 2.5, so the total is always over or under and every bet wins or loses. Asian goal lines add two more types:

Line typeExampleWhat happens
Half line2.5Win or lose, no refund
Whole line2.0 or 3.0If the total equals the line, your stake is refunded (a “push”)
Quarter line2.25 or 2.75Half your stake goes on each of the two nearest lines

A 2.25 line is half on 2.0 and half on 2.5. A 2.75 line is half on 2.5 and half on 3.0.

How does Over 2.25 settle?

Take a hypothetical £10 bet on Over 2.25 at odds of 1.90. Your £10 is split into £5 on Over 2.0 and £5 on Over 2.5.

Total goals£5 on Over 2.0£5 on Over 2.5Total returnProfit or loss
0 or 1Loses (£0)Loses (£0)£0−£10
2Push (£5 back)Loses (£0)£5−£5 (half loss)
3 or moreWins (£9.50)Wins (£9.50)£19+£9

Each winning half returns £5 × 1.90 = £9.50. On exactly 2 goals, a standard Over 2.5 bet would lose the full £10; Over 2.25 loses only £5.

How does Over 2.75 settle?

Now a hypothetical £10 bet on Over 2.75 at odds of 2.05: £5 on Over 2.5 and £5 on Over 3.0.

Total goals£5 on Over 2.5£5 on Over 3.0Total returnProfit or loss
0, 1 or 2Loses (£0)Loses (£0)£0−£10
3Wins (£10.25)Push (£5 back)£15.25+£5.25 (half win)
4 or moreWins (£10.25)Wins (£10.25)£20.50+£10.50

Each winning half returns £5 × 2.05 = £10.25. Here exactly 3 goals gives a half win: you collect profit on the 2.5 half and get the 3.0 half back.

How do Under bets on Asian lines work?

They mirror the Over side. Under 2.25 is half on Under 2.0 and half on Under 2.5, so:

  • 0 or 1 goals: both halves win.
  • 2 goals: the Under 2.0 half is refunded and the Under 2.5 half wins, a half win.
  • 3 or more: both halves lose.

Under 2.75 is half on Under 2.5 and half on Under 3.0, so exactly 3 goals is a half loss: the 2.5 half loses and the 3.0 half is refunded. Our guide to Under 2.5 goals covers the standard version of this bet.

Why would you choose a quarter line?

Quarter lines let you express a view between two standard lines. If you think a match is likely to have at least 3 goals but want some cover if it finishes with exactly 2, Over 2.25 does that, at lower odds than Over 2.5. If you like Over 2.5 but doubt there will be 4 or more goals, Over 2.75 pays more than Over 2.5 and still returns a profit on exactly 3.

The cost of that cover is in the price. Over 2.25 pays less than Over 2.5 because it loses less on 2 goals; Over 2.75 pays more because it wins less on 3 goals. Neither is safer in value terms. As with choosing between Over 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5, pick the line where your estimate beats the price, not the one that feels comfortable.

How do you work out whether a quarter line is fair?

Estimate the chance of each total and calculate the expected return. Suppose you estimate, for Over 2.25 at 1.90: 0-1 goals 25%, exactly 2 goals 25%, 3 or more 50%.

  • Expected profit = 0.50 × £9 + 0.25 × (−£5) + 0.25 × (−£10)
  • = £4.50 − £1.25 − £2.50 = £0.75

On those hypothetical numbers the bet has positive expected value. If your estimate of 3 or more goals were 45% and 0-1 goals 30%, it would be 0.45 × £9 − 0.25 × £5 − 0.30 × £10 = £4.05 − £1.25 − £3.00 = −£0.20, a negative expectation. Small changes in your estimates flip the answer, so stake modestly; see bankroll management.

What should you check before betting?

Not every bookmaker offers Asian lines, and labels differ: some show 2.25 as “2, 2.5” or “2/2.5”. Settlement rules vary by bookmaker, including how half wins and refunds appear in your balance and what happens with abandoned matches, so read the rules before you bet.
