What is bankroll management in betting?
Bankroll management means setting aside a fixed amount of money you can afford to lose, your bankroll, and staking only a small, planned share of it on each bet, often 1% to 2%. It does not make betting profitable or safe, but it limits how much a losing run can hurt and keeps decisions calm.
What is a bankroll?
Your bankroll is money set aside only for betting, kept separate from rent, bills and savings. It should be an amount you could lose in full without it affecting your life. If losing it would hurt, it is too big.
Once you set it, you do not top it up after losses. That single rule stops many of the worst habits in football (soccer in the US) betting, such as chasing losses with money that was meant for something else.
How much should you stake per bet?
Many bettors use a fixed share of their bankroll for every bet, commonly 1% to 2%. The reason is losing runs. Even with bets that each have a true 50% chance, five in a row all lose about 3.1% of the time (0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 = 0.03125). Over hundreds of bets, runs like that are normal, not bad luck.
Here is what 10 straight losses do to a £500 bankroll at different stake sizes:
| Stake per bet | Stake in £ | Lost after 10 losses | Bankroll left |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1% | £5 | £50 | £450 (90%) |
| 2% | £10 | £100 | £400 (80%) |
| 5% | £25 | £250 | £250 (50%) |
| 10% | £50 | £500 | £0 (0%) |
The same maths works in dollars. At 2%, a bad run hurts but leaves room to carry on. At 10%, it ends the bankroll.
What is the difference between flat and percentage staking?
- Flat staking: you stake the same amount every time, such as £10, based on your starting bankroll. It is simple and easy to track.
- Percentage staking: you stake a fixed percentage of your current bankroll, so stakes shrink after losses and grow after wins.
With percentage staking at 2% on £500, three losses in a row look like this:
| Bet | Bankroll before | 2% stake | Bankroll after a loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | £500.00 | £10.00 | £490.00 |
| 2 | £490.00 | £9.80 | £480.20 |
| 3 | £480.20 | £9.60 | £470.60 |
After 10 straight losses, the bankroll would be £500 × 0.98¹⁰ = about £408.54, compared with £400 under flat staking. Percentage staking slows the damage on a bad run, at the cost of smaller stakes while you recover.
Should stake size change with the odds?
Some bettors stake less on longer odds, because those bets lose more often and produce longer losing runs. A bet at 3.20, such as Over 3.5 goals in our guide to Over 1.5, 2.5 or 3.5 goals, implies 1 / 3.20 = 31.25%, so it is expected to lose more often than it wins. Combined bets like BTTS and Over 2.5 also lose in more scenarios than singles, so they deserve the same caution.
Avoid raising stakes because you feel confident. Confidence is not a probability, and no stat makes a result certain, however strong the team goal stats look.
What rules help you stick to a plan?
- Set the bankroll and the stake size before you bet, and write them down.
- Never chase losses. Doubling stakes to win money back is how small losses become big ones.
- Record every bet: date, market, odds, stake and result. Records show what is really happening.
- Set limits on deposits, losses and time. Most bookmakers offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion.
- Take breaks after a losing run or a big win, when judgement is most likely to slip.
Does bankroll management guarantee profit?
No. If your bets have negative expected value, careful staking only makes the losses slower. What bankroll management does is protect you from ruin while you learn, and keep betting as a planned expense rather than an emotional one. If it stops feeling like that, stop.
