Over 1.5, 2.5 or 3.5 goals: which line should you pick?
Over 1.5 needs at least 2 goals, Over 2.5 at least 3 and Over 3.5 at least 4. Lower lines win more often but pay less; higher lines pay more but lose more often. No line is safer in value terms. Pick the line where your estimate of the chance beats the price on offer.
How do Over/Under goal lines work?
An Over/Under bet in football (soccer in the US) is about the total number of goals scored by both teams. The “.5” in each line means a bet can never be a draw with the bookmaker: the total is always either over or under.
| Final score | Total goals | Over 1.5 | Over 2.5 | Over 3.5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0-0 | 0 | Loses | Loses | Loses |
| 1-0 | 1 | Loses | Loses | Loses |
| 1-1 | 2 | Wins | Loses | Loses |
| 2-1 | 3 | Wins | Wins | Loses |
| 2-2 | 4 | Wins | Wins | Wins |
| 3-1 | 4 | Wins | Wins | Wins |
Under bets are the mirror image. Under 2.5 wins on 0, 1 or 2 goals and loses on 3 or more. Bets are usually settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, so extra-time goals do not count; always check your bookmaker’s rules.
How do the odds compare between lines?
Here is a hypothetical match with prices for all three Over lines. Implied probability is 1 / decimal odds.
| Line | Decimal odds | Implied probability | £10 bet returns | Profit if it wins |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Over 1.5 | 1.30 | 76.9% | £13.00 | £3.00 |
| Over 2.5 | 1.90 | 52.6% | £19.00 | £9.00 |
| Over 3.5 | 3.20 | 31.3% | £32.00 | £22.00 |
The same maths works in dollars. The lower the line, the more often it should win and the less it pays.
Is Over 1.5 a safer bet than Over 2.5?
It wins more often, but that does not make it a better bet, and no bet is safe. At 1.30 you risk £10 to win £3, so a single loss wipes out the profit from more than three winners. If you stake the same amount every time, you need to win more than 76.9% of these bets just to break even.
Short prices also leave little room for error: a small overestimate of the chance turns a “likely” bet into a losing one over time.
How do you choose the right line?
Compare your own estimate with each price. Multiply your probability by the odds: above 1 means value on your numbers, below 1 means the price is too short.
Say your study of team goal stats gives these estimates for the match above:
| Line | Your estimate | Odds | Estimate × odds | Expected value per £1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Over 1.5 | 80% | 1.30 | 1.040 | +£0.04 |
| Over 2.5 | 55% | 1.90 | 1.045 | +£0.045 |
| Over 3.5 | 30% | 3.20 | 0.960 | −£0.04 |
On these numbers, Over 1.5 and Over 2.5 both show a small edge and Over 3.5 does not. The point is not which line wins most often. It is which price is out of line with your estimate. Your estimate can be wrong, which is why a small edge on paper is never a guarantee.
What stats help with each line?
- Over 1.5: how often each team’s games end 0-0 or 1-0, and how often each team fails to score.
- Over 2.5: average total goals in each team’s games, the share of games with 3 or more goals, and expected goals (xG) for and against.
- Over 3.5: how often both defences concede two or more, and whether either side tends to win or lose heavily.
If both teams are likely to score, you may also see a combined market; BTTS and Over 2.5 explains how that works.
How should stake size change with the line?
Higher lines lose more often, so expect longer losing runs. Keeping each stake a small, fixed part of your bankroll helps you ride out those runs without chasing losses.
