What is xG (expected goals) and how do bettors use it?
xG, or expected goals, measures the quality of chances. Each shot gets a probability of being scored, based on things like distance and angle, and those values are added up. A team with 1.8 xG created chances that would produce about 1.8 goals on average. Bettors use it to judge whether results reflect performance or luck.
How is xG calculated?
An xG model looks at many past shots in football (soccer in the US) and asks: how often were shots like this one scored? It considers details such as the distance from goal, the angle, whether it was a header, and whether it came from a penalty, a cross or a fast break. The answer is a number between 0 and 1.
Here is a hypothetical match for Team A. The values are illustrative, not taken from any real model.
| Shot | xG |
|---|---|
| Tap-in from 4 yards | 0.60 |
| Penalty | 0.76 |
| Header from 10 yards | 0.10 |
| Shot from the edge of the box | 0.05 |
| Long-range effort | 0.03 |
| Total | 1.54 |
Team A’s xG is 0.60 + 0.76 + 0.10 + 0.05 + 0.03 = 1.54. If Team A actually scored once, it scored about half a goal fewer than its chances suggest. Over one match that means little; over many matches, the gap starts to tell a story.
What do xG for and xG against mean?
- xG for (xGF): the quality of chances a team creates.
- xG against (xGA): the quality of chances a team allows.
- xG difference: xG for minus xG against. A positive number suggests a team creates better chances than it gives away.
For goals bets, both sides matter: a team high on both numbers tends to play open games, and a team low on both tends to play tight ones.
How do bettors use xG?
The main use is to compare goals with expected goals over a decent sample, such as 10 or more matches.
| Team (last 10 matches) | Goals scored | xG for | Goals conceded | xG against |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Team A | 8 | 14.0 | 12 | 11.5 |
| Team B | 19 | 13.0 | 9 | 12.0 |
Team A has scored 8 goals from chances worth 14.0, so it has underperformed by 6.0. Team B has scored 19 from chances worth 13.0, so it has overperformed by 6.0, and it has conceded 9 when its chances allowed were worth 12.0.
One reading is that Team A has been unlucky and Team B’s results flatter it. Big gaps often shrink over time, but not always: an excellent striker or goalkeeper can beat xG for long spells. Treat xG as a question to investigate, not an answer.
Can xG help with Over/Under and BTTS bets?
Yes, as one input among several. A rough way to build an expected total uses per-match averages for both teams:
| Hypothetical per-match averages | Team A (home) | Team B (away) |
|---|---|---|
| xG for | 1.6 | 1.2 |
| xG against | 1.1 | 1.4 |
- Team A’s expected goals: (1.6 + 1.4) / 2 = 1.5
- Team B’s expected goals: (1.2 + 1.1) / 2 = 1.15
- Expected total: 1.5 + 1.15 = 2.65
An expected total of 2.65 is just above the 2.5 line, which makes this a close call rather than a strong lean either way. Our guide on Over 1.5, 2.5 or 3.5 goals explains how to compare an estimate like this with the price. For both teams to score, look at whether each side’s expected goals are comfortably above zero, alongside the stats that help predict BTTS.
What are the limits of xG?
- Models differ. Different data providers give different xG for the same match, so do not mix sources.
- Game state matters. A team leading 2-0 may sit back and allow shots, inflating the other side’s xG.
- Small samples mislead. One match of xG says little; a single penalty adds a large chunk.
- It ignores what happens without a shot. A dangerous cross that nobody touches adds no xG.
xG is a better guide to chance quality than goals alone, but it does not make any result certain. A 2.65 expected total can still end 0-0 or 4-3. Use it next to the basic numbers in team goal stats, not instead of them.
