How does first-half goals betting work?

First-half goals bets work like full-match Over/Under bets, but only goals scored before half-time count, including first-half stoppage time. First-half Over 0.5 needs one goal before the break, Over 1.5 needs two. Because the window is half as long, lines are lower, and a goal just after half-time does not help.

What first-half goals markets are there?

Most bookmakers offer several first-half markets on football (soccer in the US):

  • First-half Over/Under 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 goals, the most common.
  • First-half both teams to score, which needs a goal from each side before the break.
  • First-half result, a bet on who is ahead at half-time.
  • Half with most goals, first half, second half or a tie.

This guide focuses on the Over/Under lines. Here is how they settle:

0-02-1LosesLosesWins
1-01-0WinsLosesLoses

2-03-2WinsWinsWins

The second row shows the main frustration of the market: a match with three goals can still lose every first-half Over bet. A bet on first-half goals settles at half-time, so later goals are ignored. Check your bookmaker’s settlement rules, which vary.

How do first-half lines compare with full-match lines?

Fewer goals are expected in 45 minutes than in 90, so the lines shift down. First-half Over 0.5 plays a similar role to full-match Over 1.5 or 2.5: a line that wins often but pays little. First-half Over 1.5 is closer to a long-odds line, since two goals before the break is less common. Our guide to Over 1.5, 2.5 or 3.5 goals explains the trade-off between how often a line wins and what it pays.

In many matches, goals are spread unevenly: tired legs, substitutions and teams chasing a result often make the second half the busier one. So it is usually unwise to assume exactly half the expected goals come before the break. Check how a specific team’s goals split by half, ideally over at least 10 matches.

How do you estimate the chance of first-half goals?

A simple method takes the expected total goals for the match, estimates the share that falls in the first half, and uses the Poisson formula. The chance of exactly 0 goals is e^(−average), and of exactly 1 goal is average × e^(−average), with e about 2.718.

Take a hypothetical match with 2.6 expected goals, and suppose you estimate 44% of them come before half-time:

StepCalculationResult
First-half expected goals2.6 × 0.441.144
Chance of 0 first-half goalse^(−1.144)0.3185 (31.9%)
Chance of exactly 11.144 × 0.31850.3644 (36.4%)
First-half Over 0.51 − 0.31850.6815 (68.2%)
First-half Over 1.51 − 0.3185 − 0.36440.3171 (31.7%)

Fair odds would be about 1 / 0.6815 = 1.47 for first-half Over 0.5 and 1 / 0.3171 = 3.15 for first-half Over 1.5. If a bookmaker offered 1.40 on Over 0.5, that implies 1 / 1.40 = 71.4%, higher than your 68.2%, so by your numbers the price is too short. These figures are only as good as the 2.6 and the 44% you start with.

What affects first-half goals?

  • Early attacking intent. Some teams press hard from kick-off; others start cautiously and open up later.
  • Chance quality. First-half expected goals (xG), where available, show whether early goals came from good chances or luck. See what xG is.
  • Home and away splits. Teams often start faster at home. Our guide to how home and away form affect goals looks at this in more detail.
  • Match stakes. A tense knockout or derby can be tight early, while a dead rubber may be more open.

What are the risks of first-half bets?

The window is short, so randomness matters more. One saved penalty or a goal ruled out by video review can decide the bet. A slow start ends any Over bet at half-time, even if the match finishes 3-2. First-half Over 1.5 in particular loses more often than it wins in most estimates, so losing runs are normal. Keep stakes small and planned.

Where PRO Betting Tips fits

PRO Betting Tips is a football tips app for iOS and Android made by MICOM TECH, focused on goals markets such as Over/Under and BTTS, plus match result and double chance. The first-half method above starts from a view of the whole match, and the Over/Under probability on a match screen, shown with its odds and an AI preview, is one input you can use for that view. The app is free with an optional premium plan, for adults 18+, and is not a bookmaker.

18+. Betting involves risk; no prediction is guaranteed. If gambling stops being fun, visit BeGambleAware or call 1-800-GAMBLER in the US.
