What is a win to nil bet?

A win to nil bet wins only if your chosen team wins the match and concedes no goals, so 1-0, 2-0 and 4-0 all win it. A 0-0 draw loses, and so does a 3-1 win. Because it needs both a win and a clean sheet, it pays more than either bet on its own.

Which scores win a win to nil bet?

Win to nil is offered for each team in most football (soccer in the US) matches, often as “Home to win to nil” and “Away to win to nil”. Here is how a home win to nil bet compares with related markets:

2-1WinsLosesLoses
1-1LosesLosesLoses

The two near misses are the 0-0, where the defence holds but the attack does not, and the narrow win with a late goal conceded, such as 2-1. Bets are usually settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Settlement rules vary by bookmaker, so check yours.

How is win to nil different from a clean sheet?

A clean sheet bet needs only zero goals conceded. Win to nil adds a second condition: your team must also score at least once. Every win to nil is a clean sheet, but not every clean sheet is a win to nil.

It also sits inside two other markets. Any win to nil result lands BTTS No, because one team failed to score, and it lands the match result bet on your team. That makes it a narrower, higher-priced version of BTTS No for one specific side.

How do you estimate the chance of a win to nil?

Start with each team’s expected goals for the match, from goals scored and conceded or from xG. A common shortcut uses the Poisson formula, where the chance of a team scoring zero is e^(−average), with e about 2.718. Treating the two teams’ scoring as independent, which is a simplification, the chance of a home win to nil is:

Chance away team scores 0 × chance home team scores at least 1

In a hypothetical match where you expect the home team to average 1.6 goals and the away team 0.8:

StepCalculationResult
Away team scores 0e^(−0.8)0.4493 (44.9%)
Home team scores 0e^(−1.6)0.2019 (20.2%)
Home team scores at least 11 − 0.20190.7981 (79.8%)
Home win to nil0.4493 × 0.79810.3586 (35.9%)
Fair odds1 / 0.3586about 2.79

For comparison, the home clean sheet alone has fair odds of 1 / 0.4493 = about 2.23. The extra condition, scoring at least once, pushes the price from about 2.23 to about 2.79. Any time your team keeps a clean sheet and wins, it must have scored at least once, so the two steps cover every winning score.

When does the price offer value?

Implied probability is 1 / decimal odds. Using the 35.9% estimate above:

Bookmaker oddsImplied probabilityCompared with 35.9%
2.5040.0%Price too short
2.7935.8%Roughly fair
3.0033.3%Price longer than your estimate suggests

At 3.00, expected value for a £10 bet is 0.359 × £20 − 0.641 × £10 = £7.18 − £6.41 = about £0.77, if your estimate is right. A small change in your expected goals moves the answer a lot, so treat the edge as uncertain. Our guide to which stats predict BTTS covers the scoring and clean sheet numbers worth checking.

When is win to nil worth a look?

  • A clear favourite with a solid defence facing an opponent that often fails to score.
  • An opponent with low xG, not just low goals, so the blank is not down to luck.
  • Team news that weakens the opponent’s attack, such as an absent main striker.

It suits matches where you expect a narrow, controlled win more than an open one. If you expect the favourite to win comfortably but think the other side may nick a goal, a plain match result bet fits that view better.

What are the risks?

Win to nil can fail two ways: your team does not win, or it concedes once. A single penalty or a stoppage-time consolation goal turns a winning bet into a loss even when your team wins easily. Because the chance is often below 50%, losing runs are normal. Keep stakes small and fixed.
